Er is een nieuwe richtlijn die wel als basis gebruikt maakt van de eerdere EuP richtlijn (Energy using Products), maar op veel punten meer expliciet is over de verplichtingen die onze kant op zullen komen.

Het betreft de ErP richtlijn (Energy related Products) als nieuwe basis om Ecodesign te bevorderen, zie tekst hierna.

As of November 20, 2009 the Eco-Design Directive EuP was replaced with the new energy-related products directive (ErP) 2009/125/EC. Met ingang van 11.20.2009 de Eco-Design Richtlijn evp werd vervangen met de nieuwe energie-gerelateerde producten richtlijn (ERP) 2009/125/EC. The old Eco-Design Directive for energy using products only covered products that were using energy such as a microwave, washing machine or a television. De oude richtlijn ecologisch ontwerp voor energieverbruikende producten alleen betrekking op producten die energie gebruikt werden, zoals een magnetron, wasmachine of een televisie. The new ErP-Directive covers products under the old EuP Directive as well as products that are energy-related and do not directly use energy such as such as double glazing windows, taps and showerheads. De nieuwe ERP-richtlijn heeft betrekking op producten die onder de oude evp richtlijn mee, alsmede producten die energie-en niet direct gebruik van energie, zoals, zoals dubbele beglazing, kranen en douchekoppen.

According to the European Commission the definition of an energy-related product is; “any goods having an impact on energy consumption during use". Energy-related products include all energy-using products, plus energy-saving products such as windows and some water-using domestic devices, which can reduce water consumption and therefore the amount of energy needed to heat water. Volgens de Europese Commissie de definitie van een energie-gerelateerd product is, "alle goederen die invloed hebben op energieverbruik tijdens het gebruik". Energiegerelateerde producten omvatten alle energie-producten gebruikt, plus energiezuinige producten zoals ramen en een beetje water -het gebruik van huishoudelijke apparaten, waardoor het water verbruik kan verminderen en dus de hoeveelheid energie die nodig is om water te verwarmen.

The ErP Directive will be implemented in each EU member country starting November 20, 2010. Het ERP-richtlijn zal worden uitgevoerd in elk EU-land vanaf 2010-11-20. The European Commission has not yet come up with a product list for the new Directive and the final text of the Directive is still to be published in the EU's Official Journal. De Europese Commissie heeft nog niet komen met een product-lijst voor de nieuwe richtlijn en de definitieve tekst van de richtlijn moet nog worden gepubliceerd in het EU Publicatieblad.
